Story: My Grandmother and I were kindred spirits. From my earliest visit to her lovely home, we were inseparable. Others might be bored with bird watching, gardening and reading, sewing and knitting preferring to explore the local shops, but not me. At least not when I was at my Grandma’s. I learned to knit under her patient instruction. (No one of our family, extended family or friends went hatless or scarf-less!) When I was little, I’d quietly sit by a birdfeeder holding up a hand filled with black sunflower seeds and wait for chickadees to land on me. There was a sense of ease at Grandma’s house that I felt nowhere else.
My Grandmother loved birds with a passion. Before I was ten I could name any local bird and identify who was around by their calls and songs. We loved going through bird books together to identify strangers at the birdbaths. I know now that she created her wild and beautiful gardens for the birds’ enjoyment. The beauty, cut flowers and food to eat were a side note to that.
When she died peaceful one Spring in her nineties, no one was surprised that she left her home to me. And that home wrapped me up and eased the deep sense of loss and grief that overcame me. Her bright spirit was alive for me everywhere I walked. And the birds sang of her as they built their nests and raised their young. She had known her home was a source of inspiration for me. Here I can pursue my writing career and have a home base from the travels I write about. And always in the background is the delightful “noise” of bird song and calls, trills and chirps, hoots in the night.
